Our divemaster internship program is a very friendly experience and the time spent here is often regarded by our Divemaster trainees (DMTs) as some of the best times of their lives.

Are you excited to take the first step to begin living the dream and become a PADI Divemaster professional?

As a DMT, you will work together with other PADI pros, focusing on workshops and practical applications that will greatly enhance your diving knowledge and fine tune your skills so you progress smoothly into the professional ranks as a diver.

The PADI professional training you will receive on your Divemaster course in Koh Tao develops and hones your leadership abilities, allowing you to successfully supervise all related dive activities and assist instructors with student divers.

Being a PADI Divemaster is a prerequisite for becoming a PADI Instructor. At GoPro-Asia, we give you the opportunity to prepare as much as possible before entering into the Instructor Development Course, which is otherwise known as the IDC. The training and expertise gained during your Divemaster course in Thailand will help transform your ability and attitude towards becoming a successful professional level diving professional.

PADI Divemaster Overview

DM PicOur PADI Divemaster training program at GoPro Asia is designed so you will have the best start as a dive professional.

You’ll achieve success by working closely with your diving course director and the team of seasoned master instructors at your disposal. During your Internship, you’ll participate in Project Aware activities, lead dive tours and assist in all logistical aspects in running a successful career development centre.

During the PADI Divemaster program, you learn dive leadership skills through both classroom theory sessions, independent study and practical applications. You’ll put this new-found knowledge into practice through our structured Internship and via a series of well-structured training exercises under the supervision of your course instructor. You’ll also need to complete stamina exercises and skill circuits, so expect to spend a lot of time in the tropical water!

It’s a challenging yet rewarding road, and you’ll have a blast doing it.

Once you have completed your Divemaster Internship, you will be ready to work as a PADI professional. You can then choose to become a PADI instructor, or simply enjoy your newly acquired training and extensive dive knowledge by helping out with the general Divemaster duties at our Career Development Centre or one of the other centres here in the tropics.

As a PADI Divemaster, trained by GoPro-Asia, you will have:

  • Instructor level knowledge in dive theory
  • Exemplary dive skills
  • An invaluable understanding of Instructor’s needs while conducting training activities
  • An excellent attitude towards the marine environment and other divers under their guidance
  • A complete knowledge of the duties and responsibilties of a PADI Divemaster

What you can expect from your divemaster training program

DM Pic 2The program consists of 3 sections:

  • Theory
  • Waterskills Development
  • Practical Assessments with Student Divers

1. Theory

Theory development includes knowledge reviews, lectures and two exams. Lectures are given daily and cover the topics of Physics, Physiology, Decompression Theory, Equipment, and Environment. Unlike any other dive centre, we offer EVERY lecture EVERY week, which creates a great deal of flexibility for the dive masters in training in their scheduling.

2. Water Skills Development

Learning how to manage logistics as a DMT at GoPro Asia will ensure that you have the skills needed to work for any dive operation worldwide.

The responsibilities of a working Divemaster are vast and vary from one location to another, so we’ve decided to offer training in all areas.

One important role of a DM is to offer certified divers guided tours of the local dive sites, and to refresh diving skills to those who have been out of the water for a long period of time. General fitness, the ability to anticipate and respond to problems, and to conduct Divemaster programs independently are also a common function of the DM.

In order to prepare in these areas, training includes:

  • 400m swim/800m snorkel/100m tired diver tow/15min tread/rescue assessment/equipment exchange
  • Multiple skill circuits to improve demonstration quality and problem solving
  • Workshops in Scuba Review in Confined Water, Skin Diver Course and Snorkeling Supervision, Discover Scuba Diving Program, Discover Local Diving
  • Practical skills such as Dive Site set up and Management, Mapping, Dive Briefing, Search and Recovery and Deep Diving

3. Practical Assessment with Student Divers

Many use the unlimited diving given to candidates enrolled in the program to prepare for the IDC. Koh Tao is one of the world’s top destinations for dive instructor training courses. For this reason all of the Divemaster candidates are asked to assist on a minimum of two full Open Water Courses, two full Advanced Courses, and one full rescue course. During this portion of the program DMTs are encouraged to develop their teaching skills, improve their feedback techniques and strengthen problem solving abilities. Most individuals find this portion of the course incredibly rewarding.
